Vintage vs Modern

Our dining room was looking dull and boring...

Dining rooms are the centre of family gatherings but also the centre of attraction for the eyes of any visitor coming to a home and specifically ours which was redesigned as an open concept kitchen- dining- living area.

As soon as you cross the front door you see our foyer closet, our mango wood cabinet with the big mirror on top and the entrance bench facing the three steps to our open concept area.  Going up those three steps you can see our dining room right in front of you. Our dining room becomes a focal point for any visitor to our house.

We noticed lately that our dining table was not big enough for our growing family and the style was   not attractive enough. Its dark oak colour was too similar with the dark color of the floor getting blended with it instead of creating interest so I decided to start my search.

My favourite retail furniture providers lately have been Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn. They have both beautiful stylish pieces with average affordable prices. So I  will show you which ones were my picks and the prices.

I searched a couple of dining rooms that would fit my expected ex- renovation style and I got quite a few from Ethan Allen as follows:

The price for that set were : the table $ 4,249, Chauncy side chair $ 629 each , Chauncy armchair $ 779 each, and the Roth Cabinet $ 5,669.  So all the set was $ 13,692 + HST for a table 6 chairs and a cabinet and you have to add $ 1,558 + HST more for two armchairs which would complete the look.

Grand total for that set would be $ 15,250 + $ 1,982 HST = $ 17,232 ( canadian dollars)

I searched Pottery Barn and I got the ones below which prices were as follows:

                                             Buffet $ 1, 998 + HST

Chair $ 499 + HST

Banks extending dining table $ 2,399 + HST

Total for the set including only 6 chairs $ 7,399 + HST = $ 8,361 Canadian Dollars. The set was far cheaper but it was still too dark and with a very rustic look as you can see below. So I decided to investigate if I could get something I would love in one of the consignment store I know for previously loved pieces.

I went to "The Singing Lady" for my furniture search, contact information as follows:

The consignment store search was the most interesting discovery I have had lately. I took many photos while I was looking at the pieces in the store. Amazing pieces with an interesting history.

Finally I fell in love with an art deco table and I was lucky enough to find the perfect 6 chairs with 2 armchairs for that table. The cherry on top was finding a 1964 cabinet for the set. Amazing!

Walnut China Cabinet - 'Malcolm Furniture', Canada 1969 - Upper Portion has 2 Glass Doors on Each Side & Center Glass Panel with Brass Fretwork - Lighted - Lower Portion has 3 Cupboards & 1 Interior Dovetailed Drawer - 72"H X 48"W X 17"D - "Beautiful!"

We received the new set on Saturday July 19th. The consignment store is selling my old table and chairs and we rearranged the furniture to keep the buffet which I love so much. We are so happy with our new dining room and the whole feeling for our open concept main level. You can notice that even our dog enjoys that space a lot. And we could do all this with 1/5 of the cost of the most expensive quote. Isn't that amazing?
